Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the UN Global Compact and the UN Global Compact Network UK?
The United Nations Global Compact is a global platform for business and non-business entities to proactively network and engage in areas of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. Participation in the UN Global Compact is a widely visible commitment to the implementation, disclosure, and promotion of its ten universal principles.
Local Networks, such as the UK Network, are clusters of UN Global Compact Participants and Signatories who come together to advance the UN Global Compact and its principles within a particular geographic context. Our role is to help organisations engage in the UN Global Compact with respect to implementation of the Ten Principles, and create opportunities for multi-stakeholder engagement and collective action.
Do I have to pay to join the UN Global Compact?
Companies with annual turnover greater than USD 50 million are required to make an annual financial contribution to support the work of the UN Global Compact. For companies below that threshold and non-business organisations, there is no mandatory fee to join the UN Global Compact.
How much does it cost to join the UK Network?
For companies that are subject to a mandatory fee at the global level, UK Network membership is included without incurring any additional cost.
For organisations that are not required to make an annual financial contribution at the global level, UK Network membership is optional and subject to an annual membership fee. Please consult our 2020 Fee Schedule for further information.
Can I just join the UN Global Compact without joining the Local Network?
For companies subject to a mandatory fee at the global level, UK Network membership is included. However, though strongly encouraged, participation in Network activities is not a requirement. For organisations not subject to a mandatory fee at the global level, there is no obligation to join the UK Network. However, many UN Global Compact Participants and Signatories find that engaging the Local Network enables them to get more out of their UN Global Compact involvement. Joining the Local Network enables organisations to engage locally on issues relating to the Ten Principles, participate in cross sector events and exchange with peers.
Can I join the Local Network without joining the UN Global Compact?
No - members of the UK Network must be registered Participants or Signatories of the UN Global Compact.
There are many benefits of membership, but for many organisations the key issues are:
- support in fulfilling the UN Global Compact’s requirement for communication on progress;
- regular meetings and events, which provide excellent learning and networking opportunities;
- staying informed about GCO activities;
- enhanced relations with other UN agencies.
Who is the Secretariat of the UN Global Compact Network UK?
The Secretariat of the UN Global Compact Network UK is hosted by The Sustainability Hub, a specialist consultancy. The Secretariat is responsible for coordinating a programme of activities for members of the Network.

What is the difference between UN Global Compact Participants and UN Global Compact Signatories?
As a result of the UN Global Compact's new funding model, organisations that are involved with the UN Global Compact are required to choose between two distinct engagement tiers: Participant or Signatory. Participants have full access to UN Global Compact resources and activities, while Signatories have basic access. Click here for more detailed information, and to select your engagement tier.
Can I use the UN Global Compact logo?
